Can you imagine a dog blushing? The Pharaoh Hound's nose and ears turn dark pink when it becomes excited. The facial features appear to blend with the reddish coat, and the yellow eyes glow. Some people also say that the dogs appear to "smile."
As the name suggests, this breed lived in ancient Egypt as one of the earliest domesticated dogs. Paintings and hieroglyphics indicate that the Egyptian people adored the dogs as hunters and family members. King Tut even buried his beloved dog in a perfumed coffin. Because they adore attention, children and play, Pharaoh Hounds make delightful pets.
IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS
Size: Males 23 to 25 inches, Females 21 to 24 inches (at the withers).
Appearance: Lean, chisled body with lithe, effortless motion.
Coat and Color: Short, shiny, thick combination of soft and moderately firm hairs. Tan to reddish brown color with white markings on the chest and tail tip; minimal white markings on the toes and center of face permitted, but discouraged.
Head: Sloped skull with a wedge-shaped muzzle; oval, amber eyes; large, high, erect, pointed ears.
